In 1974, CAN positioned itself at the junction where the most potent manifestations of various musical genres met. The band did so firmly and assertively and the result was a stunning album that further established the band members’ reputation as some of Germany’s most innovative and forward-looking musicians.
Soon Over Babaluma was written and recorded shortly after Damo Suzuki left the band. But the album did not suffer from the singer’s departure despite what some music historians and critics, including Jim DeRogatis, think. With Michael Karoli and Irmin Schmidt sharing vocal duties, the band focussed on composition and instrumentation, creating in the process a dense and truly engaging record.
This is a seminal krautrock album and it presents CAN in its inherent completeness.
